Abstract:
As part of its global corporate strategy, UK-based banking group Standard Chartered (StanChart), decided to concentrate on Asia for its future growth. Within Asia, the bank was concentrating on India, China and South Korea. For its expansion in South Korea, Asia's third largest economy, the bank was following an inorganic growth strategy. Many analysts were confident that this strategy would enable the bank to get a strong foothold in the South Korean market and enable it to fulfill its global strategy objective of acquiring leadership position in the continent. But some others were skeptical about the strategy.

Pedagogical Objectives:

  • To highlight StanChart's global corporate strategy, its growth strategies in South Korea and the bank's business strategy for the South Korean market
  • To discuss whether StanChart's growth strategy in South Korea would enable it to achieve its global strategy objective.
